Bronze DOfE 2019
Posted 20 July 2019
Here is this years first Bronze Expedition team ready to go this morning! Duke of Edinburgh is a great opportunity for young people to learn valuable life skills and how to work together as a team towards a common goal. It encourages fitness, community spirit and identifying and improving your personal skills, all valuable assets to future employers. Unfortunately the cadets set off in less than perfect weather this morning so it will also be a test of their resilience and their waterproofs!
Bronze expedition complete! 3 of the 4 were undertaking their assessed expedition and they passed! This means that with a little bit of work in the skills, sport and volunteering sections hopefully they’ll soon be proudly receiving their badges. Congratulations guys!

PUTTING THE AIR INTO AIR CADETS!
What did you do this weekend?
Our Cadets made the most of theirs by taking the long journey to RAF Ternhill to experience the thrill of flying a glider. Hosted by the experienced instructors of 632 Volunteer Gliding Squadron, the Cadets were taken through Progressional Aviation Training Packages to familiarised with the practical principles of flight. They learnt how to work with the Viking T1 Winch Gliders both on the ground and in the air, even getting to take control of the aircraft in flight.
Whilst there we had the honour of seeing a fellow Wales & West Air Cadets, Cpl Jake Scott, fly solo for the first time and earn his Silver Wings. Congratulations Jake, excellent Sortie.
A fantastic day was had by all with four of our Cadets earning their Blue/Bronze Gliding Wings. They now look on to the opportunity of training for their Silver Wings and flying Solo.
Wing Athletics 2019
Posted 28 April 2019
Small but Mighty.
An amazing day for 561 on the field today. A group of six cadets from Aberystwyth travelled down to Carmarthen to compete against the other squadrons in the wing, in track and field events including 100m through to 1500m, javelin, shotput, discus, long jump, high jump and relay.
CPLs Jones & Davies and CDTs Lawson, Gnat, Coverdale and Lawson all participated in three events each plus a relay, and almost all came away with a top 3 place. CDT Cerys Lawson in fact came away with a 1st place in all four of her events!
As a result of everyone’s hard work today, 561 has walked away with their heads held high. Out of 18 participating squadrons, and all whilst fielding only six cadets, 561 finished as the 3rd best placed Squadron overall - A phenomenal achievement.
The team also achieved 2nd for both Junior Boys and Girls, as well as 3rd overall for the Boys and 2nd overall for the Girls.

Senior Football Team of No.3 Welsh Wing
Posted 3 March, 2019
Huge congratulations to the Senior Football team of No3 Welsh Wing who came second in today’s inter-wing competition at RAF Cosford today.
The final against a strong Merseyside Wing Team was a close game finishing 1-1 despite 3 Welsh playing with only 10 players. It then went to penalties where we were unfortunate to lose.
Well done all.

Flying Day at Cosford
Posted September 20, 2017
8 cadets from 561 were lucky enough to be selected to visit 8 Air Experience Flight at Cosford this weekend. As part of the day, the cadets each got a turn to take to the skies beside an experienced pilot in a Grob Tutor, one of the training aircraft used by fast jet pilots.
A perk of the flight is that if the cadet felt confident enough, they were lucky enough to get the opportunity to experience and undertake aerobatic manoeuvres.
Thanks to the valuable experience these flying days grant them, many of our cadets are well on their way to earning their wings. A proud achievement for any cadet!
Mr John Andrews
Posted May 18, 2017
The squadron was visited last night by long term friend of the squadron, John Andrews. John has been one of the main figures of the Aberystwyth RBL for many years, but it was about his life as a Royal Navy Submariner that he came in to talk us about. As well as cadets and staff, members of the civilian committee and parents also attended what can only be described as one of the best talks I have ever attended. John was Chief of the Boat during the Cold-War and his stories kept us riveted to our seats.
On behalf of us all, I'd like to thank John for coming to the squadron to give his talk and also for all the support he has given us over the years. A true gentleman.
Taking to the Skies
Posted May 17, 2017
A recent visit to RAF Cosford saw 8 cadets from the squadron take to the skies in the RAF's Grob Tutor aircraft. For some cadets, it was their first ever flight and for others they put into practice what they had previously learnt at the RAF St Athan ground PTT training.
The day started early with the cadets picked up by coach which had already picked up cadets from 1429 Cardigan Squadron. Then under the supervision of Flight Sergeant Scott Friel, the coach made its way to RAF Cosford.
While waiting for their turn to fly, cadets made good use of the Aircraft Museum at Cosford, which is a great day out in its own rights.
Cadets Learn to Fly while keeping their feet on the ground
Posted May 7, 2017
Cadets from 561 (Ardwyn, Aberystwyth & District) Squadron, Royal Air Force Air Cadets, travelled the 220 mile roundtrip to MOD St Athan to complete part of their Aviation Training Package which is part of the new Progressive Training Syllabus.
They reinforced their knowledge of basic principles of airmanship, aircraft instrumentation and airfield layout; consolidating it on the part task trainer(PTT).
The cadets were confident in their abilities due to the regular use of the Squadrons recently built Flight Simulator, which certainly gave them a head start.
They are now looking forward to building on their experience by taking to the air, with a Volunteer Gliding Schools or Air Experience Flights, and achieving their flying and gliding wings.
The use of the squadron’s flight simulator proved a valuable asset to the cadets who attended the PTT training today. They built on their knowledge and experience by using the technology available and later this month, these cadets and others will have a chance to do it for real as the squadron has both gliding and flying to come on the forthcoming weeks.

Cadet from 561 have done the squadron proud at the inter-squadron athletics held at Carmarthen today by coming 3rd overall. Some great results will see a number of cadets being picked to represent the Wing and the regional competition which will be held next month at RAF Cosford.
The staff are really proud of all the cadets.
